Hi! I’m Fikret Can Gürbüz, an ex-software engineer/full stack web developer transitioning into red teaming and cybersecurity. Currently a first year student at Bogazici University MIS department.

My computer journey

Well I’ve been on the computer for as long as I can remember. Started at age 5(?) with a book called Basic for Kids. Then learned Python, some C, Javascript and helped my brothers Django projects till I was 13. Then I started to get interested on cybersecurity and finished Atil Samancioglu’s famous Udemy course.

Finishing the course made me realize, with the current programming knowledge I had at the age 13 would make me a script kiddie at best, and I didn’t want to be a copy-paster. So I continued learning programming, started working on full-stack web projects, finished CS50, and all of it’s counterparts like CS50AI, CS50Web, and so forth… Freelanced for couple of years to earn my first income and got lost in the heavy learning programming, working for projects I don’t like.

Last year, I finally beat my scares and dived right into cybersecurity world. With my years of web development knowledge, I already knew basic attacks like XSS, SQLi and more. So it was a easy transition.

Then comes this september(2024), I’ve met a great mentor, my current department head Bilgin Metin, (he is the sole reason I am in Bogacici btw) who made me crazy about cybersecurity. Started loving the sport much more with him and I am currently working as a pentester under his mentorship.

I hope to master my cybersecurity knowledge and dedicate my life in to the science of breaking things.

Currently trying to get more hands on experience with CTF’s and platforms like THM and HTB. Also trying to learn malware development which is a dream of mine since watching the Mr. Robot growing up (great scene that made me interested).
